Just who was Elizabeth Shindler, anyway?
Elizabeth Shindler was the wife of Conrad Shindler, who lived in Shepherdstown during the Civil War. Elizabeth's life is largely one of mystery. Very few material object of hers survive today, and because of this, it is difficult for us to create a clear picture of just who Elizabeth, the woman, was. The only clues remaining can be found in documentation pertaining to her husband, Conrad, and they are vague at best. But her role as a wife and mother within her home was important, not only to her, but to her family, and it is for this reason that she deserves to be remembered, even if it is only though the documentation of her husband.
This Project...
Was created by Melanie Garvey in conjunction with her History Capstone.
The goal of this project was to look at remaining physical evidence of Elizabeth Shindler's life to figure out how she lived and how she dressed. The lack of physical evidence on her specifically is what facilitated the exploratory approach.
